The Omeo Highway runs through the Mitta Valley connecting the Upper Murray region with Omeo, East Gippsland and down to the sea at Lakes Entrance in Victoria. Whether you are coming from Albury-Wodonga and the north or from Gippsland in the south it provides ready access to all parts of the valley and is the starting point for touring whether it be on 2 wheels or on 4.
The fully sealed highway and the side roads offer some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in Australia. From high alpine plains to beautiful dairy country you won’t be disappointed. Friendly country pubs at Eskdale, Mitta Mitta, Dartmouth and Anglers Rest along with fuel stops and a number of cafes mean plenty of options for a refreshing pit stop. Accommodation and camping spots are also available.
While touring the Valley take the side road and explore Dartmouth Dam, one of Australia’s most impressive engineering feats and key link in the Murray Basin Water system. The Omeo Highway also allows you to make the Mitta Valley part of a scenic weekend drive tour through Victoria’s beautiful North East. Connecting to the high country and Falls Creek and with the beautiful Upper Murray region, the Mitta Valley forms the heart of any multi-day scenic driving tour plan.
Remember the valley has many working dairy and beef farms so please slow down if you come across livestock crossing the road. We may be a long from the city but we too get the occasional traffic jam!
